Unused Programs – Could They Be To Blame For Your Computer Slowing Down?

Isn't it funny how one day your computer can be running smoothly and then in a few months it can slow down to the point where you just want to throw it out the window? The real question is - exactly why did it slow down? Well the answer isn't clear cut and easy to digest but most of it has to deal with how the operating system of your computer works. Most Windows based operating systems are designed to work as efficiently as possible, but that unfortunately isn't the case in real life. What happens is that after time your computer starts to build up junk in many different areas and this is what slows it down (for the most part). All you need to do to make it faster is to remove the junk. The only problem is finding all of the areas that the junk builds up and also removing it.

Exactly what areas does junk build up? Well there are multiple areas but unfortunately I can't tell you all of them since it would simply take to long and I don't have enough room the write all of it on this article. So instead, let's focus on just one area that can improve your computers performance - removing unnecessary programs. Most of the people that I come across that have problems with their computers being slow usually have installed a lot of programs that they don't need in the past and they haven't bothered to remove them. If you have programs that are installed on your computer and they are not serving any purpose to you, you should really get rid of them. They will take up space on your hard drive and make things worse they will be running in the background using your computer resources which will slow it down drastically.

Just to be on the safe side, if you are not sure of what a program is or what it does, don't remove it - your computer might actually be using it. Only remove a program if you know what it is and what it does. Here is the procedure:

If you are a Windows XP user just start by clicking Start, going to the Control Panel, clicking on the Add/Remove Programs and then waiting a little while for the list to be populated (if you have a lot of programs on your computer it will take a while for all of them to appear). Now, just remove the programs that you know you don't need by clicking on the program and then selecting "Change/Remove". After that you just have to go through with the process to remove it.

For you Windows Vista user, start off by clicking the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, click on Control Panel and make sure that at the top left hand corner of the window that you have "Classic View" selected. Now just double click on the "Programs and Features" button (give it some time to populate your list of currently installed programs) and then just select the programs that you don't need and at the top of the window select Uninstall to remove them. Remember to to only remove programs if you for 100% sure what they are and make sure that you don't need them.

2 Tricks To Shorten Your Waiting Time Of A Slow Computer

Having a slow computer can be very frustrating. If you like me, you are probably trying to do just about everything in order to speed up the process of what it is that you are doing. One of the best ways to do this is to get to your most commonly used applications as quickly as possible. Just think of how much time is wasted when you are looking all over your computer trying to find the applications that you use all of the time.

If you were to add up all of that time spent looking around your computer it would eventually accumulate to a fair bit by the end of the week. So what's the alternative? In this article I'm going to show you two little tricks that you can do so that you will be able to find your applications much quicker.

Let's begine with the quick launch (if you are not sure what the quick launch is, its the group of icons that are right beside your start button). For those of you that don't see a group of small icons right beside your start menu, just right click on the taskbar and select the Properties option. Then just select the "Show Quick Launch" option. Now, in order to do anything you are going to have to unlock the quick launch since it is locked by default. To unlock it, right click on the task bar and select "Lock Taskbar". Now you should see small dotted lines which will allow you to resize it your quick launch. Now all you have to do is to just find the top 3 applications that you frequently use by going through your All Programs list (in the start menu) and then just right click on their icons and select the Copy option. Now go to your desktop, right click and select the Paste option. Now you should see a copy of that icon on your desktop. All you have to do is to just drag it into the quick launch area and the icon should be in bottom right hand corner next to the start menu. So now when start up your computer you don't have to look all over the place for your main programs - there right in front of you now.

Now the start menu can also be of use to you when you are looking around for your applications. If you click on the start menu you will notice a faint horizontal line on the left hand side. Everything that is above this line is permanently there unless you manually remove it and everything below this line is programs that you have most recently used. What you're going to want to do here is to add 3-5 programs that you use regularly to the permanent (the top part) of the list. Just go to All Programs on the start menu, right click on the program icon and select "Pin To Start Menu". Do this for all 3-5 programs that you want to add to your start menu. Now you have your main 3 programs on your task bar and the other 3-5 regularly used ones on your start menu so you don't have look around your computer to find where they are.

Another thing that you can do is to spend some time cleaning up your desktop. Only keep icons for programs - everything else, like random files, you should either delete or place into folders so that they are completely organized and in order so when you go looking for them you know exactly where they are.

In the Properties window, click the Tools tab and then click on the Check Now button. Now the Check Disk window should appear and you should select "Automatically Fix File System Errors" and also check off the box for "Scan For And Attempt To Recover For Bad Sectors". Click the "start" icon and if it says that you need to perform a restart just restart your computer. By the time you come back from your restart it will launch the program.

By running this program on your slow computer what you are doing is letting your computer check the hard drive for any problems or any potential problems that might occur. Then what the program does is it tries to fix these problems so that they will not develop into larger problems. These types of problems tend to occur as a result from when your computer freezes or when you do something like turn off your computer suddenly.
