Five Great Horror Movies For That Perfect Movie Marathon

Watching horror movies can be a great way to have a fun evening with your friends, no matter how old you are. No more so than if you have a nice home theatre system, it can be a night full of screams, laughter and you can even add popcorn to the mix for a great entertaining night.

If you have an HD television, many of these classics have been released on the Blu Ray platform, but another option these days is getting them off the internet. With many of the latest television sets, you can watch things right off the web, or download them and transfer them to a media player. There is also the option of creating your own little theater by connecting a projector to your PC.

These five films are a perfect choice for a classy night of horror movies. It is a choice of titles that have been produced over the last half a century, proving that first class horrors never date. These were not only great scary movies though, they were also highly rated films, nominated for many awards, and in some cases winning. These are five films that every film-lover should see at least once.

Made in 1960 by the legendary film director, Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho is still as shocking and creepy today as it was back then. The original starred Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, and should not be confused with Gus Van Sant's remake starring Vince Vaughn. Unless your name is Janet Leigh, Bates Motel is definitely worth re-visiting if you have not seen this movie in years. Hitchcock's direction is as always impeccable, and you will watch most of this from the edge of your seat.

William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist came out in 1973 on the silver screen. Since then its been scaring people around the globe, and this tale of a possessed teen girl played by Linda Blair, who received a nomination for an Oscar for her role, is spine-chilling still today. The Exorcist was the winner of 2 Oscars, for Best Writing and Sound, while it also received another 8 nominations.

Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1975, was an instant classic. Yes, it may not live up to the technology of today, and the shark may be a little cheesy, but it still makes people scream and jump just the same. It won 3 Academy Awards, including one for the unforgettable original score by John Williams.

Stephen King has been the master of horror writing for the better part of four decades and picking one of the film adaptations of his books can always add to a scary night. Kathy Bates won an Academy Award in 1990 for her role as Annie Wilkes in Misery, a chilling tale about an obsessed fan who rescues a famous writer after a motor accident.

For something a little more modern, the six time nominated The Sixth Sense is the perfect choice. Writer and director M Night Shyamalan manages to weave together a great scary mystery, and gets great performances from Bruce Willis and the nominated Toni Collette. It is also had one of the best child actor performances ever from Haley Joel Osment as the child who can see dead people, and Osment also received an Academy Award nomination.

For those who have not seen these films, go watch them now and be ready to fall in love with the horror genre. For those who have already found that love, there are films just waiting to be watched from Japanese ghost stories to the bloody gore movies that gained popularity in the seventies.
