A Review Of The Google Nexus S

The Nexus S is the latest handset to be released from internet search giant Google. Unlike its preceding model, the Nexus One which was manufactured by Taiwanese corporation HTC, the Nexus S is being built by the Korean company Samsung. For this reason, you may be forgiven for thinking that it is just another Samsung Galaxy with a different name, though there are a few details which set it apart from the Galaxy series.

The Samsung Google Nexus S, to give it its full title, has a few tricks up its sleeve that sets it apart from all the other Android phones on the market today. The most important factor, aside from the neat design, is the fact that the Nexus S comes with the latest version of the popular Android operating system, version 2.3 or Gingerbread. To power this newest evolution of the Android OS is a super fast 1GHz Hummingbird central processing unit (CPU), and 512MB of random access memory (RAM).

The most noticeable external feature that sets this handset apart is the rather strange curvature that has been engineered into the design. Concave in dimension and probably resulting in much more expensive production costs, the design is supposed to help calling comfort over long periods and it is hard to say if it works, except to say that it does not-not work, if that is understandable. Another fantastic feature is the super-AMOLED display which has a resolution of 480 x 800, though the numbers tell only half the story as the S displays colors and artifacts much more clearly than any of its competitors offerings.

The Nexus Ss biggest downfall is also, ironically, its primary USP. The Android Gingerbread operating system, while great at many things, still lacks the fit and finish of operating systems like that used in the Apple iPhone. One gripe many users had with Android 2.2 and previous versions was the difficulty in copy and paste applications and although that has been improved, it is still not a simple and straightforward process.

Buying a smartphone in today's market it seems is all about how much you like, or how quickly you can learn an operating system, rather than the internal specifications. Most top level handsets are very similar in capabilities but ultimately it is how they perform functions that sets them apart. This is what makes the Nexus S easily the best Android phone available today, but also co-currently, what still puts it firmly behind the Apple iPhone 4G.
